This really is not a knock on anyone that lost their live in this tragic event or even the individual police officers that put themselves in the line of danger. However, it is amazing to me how an entire city was under pseudo “martial” law and was brought to it’s knees both physically and psychologically by simply giving up their basic rights in the name of terror — all with just ONE guy on the loose in a city of millions. We now have seen various videos showing that 9,000+ police and FEDERAL FBI agents were going house to house in searching for the suspect with no such warrant. What if you said no? Check out the video of how the authorities treated some of the “innocent:”
I guess this all gets back to how much of our personal liberty should be given up in the name of safety? Should we bend our liberties in the same manner when a mass murderer is loose on the city streets? I’m really not trying to downplay or say there were not extreme circumstances in this Boston terror event, but did we really need that many authorities involved? Having said that I’m certainly glad it is over and this scumbag was captured alive.
I think the bigger issue now as a society is that we now seem preconditioned to cower under the bed, and more importantly hand over over our more of our rights when the word “terror” is mentioned just to make us feel safe. I mean post 9/11 we have restructured entire parts of the government including creating several new agencies (e.g. DHS, TSA, etc…) pumped billions/trillions into various intelligences efforts all while marching into several undeclared wars (yes one was perhaps a just war in my mind). As usual I think Ron Paul has the right idea on this event so take a listen to his take starting at around the 4 minute mark below:
More people are slain needlessly by common thugs on the streets by a factor of 100 or more everyday yet the people and both the liberal and conservative news networks tend to ignore this fact while shouting that Achmed might be under your bed right now. Now we have a US senators openly saying the entire US is a battlefield, with justification for new drone surveillance, and that we should indefinitely detain the suspect without trial. Maybe Bin Laden knew exactly what he was doing?
One thing is for sure is that I suggest liberty minded folks try to get out of the cities if they can. I can only imagine when a more major event takes place, whether it be terror or from civil disobedience, all hell will break loose.
“He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself” – Thomas Paine
